It’s in an interview with Gary Neville in the podcast The Overlap that the German tells about what happened.

Schweinsteiger had spent one season at Manchester United when Portuguese José Mourinho took over as coach in the summer of 2016.

One day, he was looking forward to the future after a training session with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But the next day, on what was Schweinsteiger’s birthday, everything changed when he met the club’s director of football John Murtough.

– He said: “You are not allowed to enter the dressing room”, says Schweinsteiger in the podcast.

The German says that he asked “why”, and was told that the manager had decided that.

– Without warning? asks a slightly shocked Gary Neville.

– No warning, nothing, replies Schweinsteiger.

Bastian Schweinsteiger then moved on to the youth team to train there. He says that he had to ask others to go into the changing room and get training clothes and shoes that he had there.

– I don’t know why it was he who told me that. Someone could have come and said it on the first day or explained it to me in a normal way, says Schweinsteiger, who then trained with the U16 team.

The situation was new for the player who had a successful career behind him at Bayern Munich – and won just about everything there is to winWon eight league golds and one Champions League title with Bayern Munich. Also won several cup golds. During his career, he won 121 international matches and scored 24 goals for Germany, with whom he won the World Cup gold in 2014. .

After a chat with Mourinho, the Portuguese reportedly explained that he did not feel Schweinsteiger was happy in Manchester, as he traveled to Germany for treatment while injured.

– Mourinho never let me train with the first team. I guess they wanted to get rid of me. Nevertheless, I was still very happy at United. I loved wearing the jersey, I loved it, says the German.

Gary Neville interjects that he was a representative in the English players’ committee, and that what Manchester United did is not legal.

– I am shocked and embarrassed by what I hear. Players and clubs can end up at odds with each other, but there are some rules for how one behaves and behaves, says Neville.

Over the course of three months, Schweinsteiger hardly spoke to or saw any of his teammates. He had to train before or after the training sessions for the first team.

But suddenly one day he was told by Mourinho that he could train with the first team again. Schweinsteiger got some minutes in four games during the season, but none of them were in the Premier League.

– When you see other players in your position, you think “I’m better than this guy”. We had Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick, Morgan Schneiderlin and Marouane Fellaini. I felt like I was the system man in the queue.

In the end, the apology came from Mourinho, but by then the damage had already been done.

– The first time someone said sorry was when I decided to leave United for the USAMLS club Chicago Fire.. I asked José if I could leave and he said sorry for the way he had treated me at the beginning and that he had to let me go because he couldn’t say no.
