Beijing celebrates 50 years of the UN seat, but Taiwan also knocks on the door

by admin

On October 25, 1971, in its 26th session, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 with an overwhelming majority that allowed China to enter as the sole representative to the United Nations. As Beijing celebrates the anniversary, US and Taiwanese officials meet to discuss the United Nations’ “significant” role for the island by discussing plans to allow it to “participate in a meaningful way” in the United Nations.

Surprise move

50 years have passed since Beijing’s entry into the UN and China is celebrating its anniversary, but close to the weekend the last move in the dialogue between Washington and Taipei took place.
The US State Department said “high-level representatives” from the US State Department and the Taiwan Foreign Ministry discussed “the expansion of Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations and other international fora”.

The strategy would be addressed in a video meeting that will add fuel to the fire after Joe Biden’s statements last week of renewed support for Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack. The United States should “be cautious with its words and actions on the Taiwan issue and not send wrong signals to the separatist forces aiming for Taiwan independence, so as not to seriously damage China-United States relations for peace and stability. in the Taiwan Strait, ”Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.

The role of China

The UN seat is considered by China to be the clearest demonstration of the “One China” principle, according to which it disregards the sovereignty of Taiwan, a Chinese province that will have to return home sooner or later.
On the contrary, Taiwanese accusations are making their way: China allegedly abused resolution 2758, in other words the resolution would have decided the question of China’s representation at the United Nations, but Taiwan’s participation would remain unresolved.

The Chinese thesis is that fifty years ago it was decided to restore all the rights of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations and to recognize the representatives of its government as the only legitimate UN representatives of China.
For President Xi Jinping, China has offered full support to the United Nations cause over the past 50 years by supporting the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, played a constructive and increasingly important role in international affairs, and made great contributions to the United Nations. peace and world development.
