Belarus, on TV a new forced confession of dissident Protasevich: “Praise” to Lukashenko

by admin

Roman Protasevich, the Belarusian dissident arrested on 23 May after the hijacking of the Athens-Vilnius flight on which he was traveling to Minsk, reappeared on television and “disavowed” his ideas in a farce interview. In front of a reporter from Minsk public television, the founder of Nexta, one of the most used Telegram channels by the opposition, praised the president Aleksandr Lukashenko and withdrew its support to Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who had challenged him in the controversial presidential elections last August.

Protasevich is under arrest on charges of organizing “mass protests” following the disputed re-election of Lukashenko, who in recent days alluded to Protasevich’s responsibility for “serious crimes” in the Ukrainian separatist region of Donbass that could cost him capital punishment.

It is the second time that Protasevich has appeared in a video since the arrest. The first time, ten days ago, he appeared with his face marked, denying that he had any health problems. German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the footage “disgusting”.
