US President Joe Biden said he had talked about Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping with whom he agreed “to respect the Taiwan agreement”. “I spoke to Xi from Taiwan. We agree … we will stick to the Taiwan agreement,” Biden told reporters at the White House. The reference is apparently to the “one China” policy which recognizes the territorial unity of China despite the presence of two distinct governments in Beijing and Taipei and the Taiwan Relations Act which states that Washington has established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China with the expectation that Taiwan’s future will be decided by peaceful means.
