Burns, 65, is currently Professor of International Relations at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Prior to that, he worked in the US government for 27 years in diplomacy.

According to information from the US State Department, Burns served successively as the senior director of the White House National Security Committee for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasian Affairs, the spokesperson of the State Department, the US ambassador to Greece and the NATO ambassador. The White House also announced on the same day that Biden nominated former President Obama’s White House Chief of Staff Ram Emanuel as ambassador to Japan. Emanuel served as the mayor of Chicago from 2011 to 2019.
