On Monday (15th) evening, he had just a three-hour video meeting with President Xi Jinping of the Communist Party of China.
“We are not going to change our (to Taiwan) policy at all,” Biden told the media in New Hampshire, where he promoted the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill signed on Monday.
“I said that they must decide-‘they’-Taiwan, not us. And we are not encouraging (Taiwan) independence, we are encouraging, they do exactly what the “Taiwan Law” requires.” Bye Den said. “This is what we are doing. Let them decide what they think.”
In 1979, the US Congress passed the “Taiwan Relations Act.”
Biden told the media earlier in the day on Tuesday that he made it clear during a call with Xi Jinping that the United States abides by the “Taiwan Relations Act,” under which the United States promised to provide Taiwan with weapons for defense.
“She (referring to Taiwan) is independent. She makes her own decision,” Biden said at the time.
When in New Hampshire, the media asked Biden what he meant by “independence”? And the specific content of his discussion with Xi Jinping on the Taiwan issue last night.
Biden replied that the Taiwan issue is the “essential bottom line.” No matter what the Chinese side says, the United States abides by road regulations, air identification zones and the definition of territorial waters in the “Law of the Sea”.
“We will stay outside of their (referring to China) territorial waters, but we will not be intimidated or changed and will not pass through the South China Sea (navigation). We talked about this, there is no argument, it is just a matter of fact.” He said.
After the Biden Xi Jinping video conference ended on Monday night, a senior government official told the media after the meeting that the United States does not support Taiwan’s independence.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, the official news agency of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping criticized that the Taiwan authorities have repeatedly attempted to “rely on the United States for independence,” while some people in the United States deliberately engage in “using Taiwan to control China.” This trend is very dangerous. They are playing with fire. The fire must burn itself.
In recent weeks, a large number of Chinese military aircraft have flown into Taiwan’s airspace, which has aroused severe warnings from US officials and raised concerns about potential conflicts.
Biden described his meeting with Xi Jinping in positive terms on Tuesday, saying that the two leaders have “many things to follow up” and that the United States and China will set up working groups on a series of issues.
Although the two leaders did not meet face-to-face, this meeting may be the last opportunity to “meet” this year. In early 2021, Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics, and the leaders of the two countries are also troubled by domestic issues.
Xi Jinping is busy preparing for the fall of the Communist Party of China Congress, when Xi Jinping is expected to be re-elected for a third term, and Biden will focus on the midterm elections, hoping to prevent the Democratic Party from losing control of one or both houses of Congress.
