Blinken arrived in Israel. Objective: to consolidate the truce

by admin

The US secretary of state Antony Blink arrived this morning in Israel, the first stage of a mission in the region which aims to consolidate the truce reached by the Jewish state and Hamas last Thursday, after 11 days of conflict. Blinken will be in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Cairo and Amman.

There are scheduled meetings in Jerusalem with the Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu and in Ramallah, in the occupied Palestinian territories, with the Palestinian president Abu Mazen. Not with Hamas, which is in control of the Gaza Strip.

Blinken’s visit is the first in the region for the top of the Biden administration. Upon arrival in Tel Aviv, the secretary was greeted by the Israeli foreign minister Gabi Ashkenazi.

The ceasefire between Tel Aviv and Hamas started last Thursday. In East Jerusalem, tension rose yesterday with the stabbing of an Israeli soldier and a civilian, and the killing of the Palestinian assailant. Riots also in Ramallah, where a Palestinian man was killed by an undercover Israeli agent.

In an interview with the Cnn prior to departure, Blinken said the administration is now focused on trying to “build something more positive.” “Palestinians and Israelis deserve equal opportunity, security and dignity,” he added, stressing that it is not the right time for an immediate resumption of negotiations, but that measures could be taken to repair the damage of Israeli air strikes, which have destroyed hundreds of homes and infrastructure in Gaza.
