Blinken in Jordan and Egypt to consolidate the truce in Gaza

by admin

AMMAN – The US secretary of state Antony Blink arrived in Cairo this morning after two intense days of talks with Israel and the Palestinian National Authority. The mission is part of a Middle East tour that began in Jerusalem and Ramallah and will end today with Jordan. The head of American diplomacy hopes to consolidate, precisely with the active participation of Egypt, the fragile truce between the Jewish state and Hamas.

The head of diplomacy met with the Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah a-Sisi, the Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, and the chief of intelligence Abbas Kamel.

The US and Egypt work together to ensure that Israelis and Palestinians live in safety, Blinken emphasized, praising Cairo for the mediation work between the two sides: “We have in Egypt a real and effective partner in dealing with violence, completing it relatively quickly. And now, working closely together, let’s build something positive. “

Both Egypt and Jordan are key allies of the United States and both have peace agreements with Israel allowing them to mediate between Israel and the Palestinians. Egypt maintains links with Hamas, but also imposes tight control over Gaza together with Israel, with the common goal of preventing the armament of the Islamic group.

The stop in Cairo, together with Biden’s telephone talks with al Sisi, signals a closer relationship between the countries: the beginning of the Biden administration was instead marked by cold relations, with the United States underlining the bad statistics in fact of human rights of Egypt.
