A five-year-old Afghan boy drowned in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina as he tried last night with his parents and other siblings to cross the Una River to illegally cross into Croatia. In giving the news, the regional media underline the efforts of doctors to try to resuscitate the child, but these were in vain.
The tragedy, local media reported, occurred in the municipality of Novi Grad and, according to a report by the local police, there are four other minor children in the family of illegal immigrants. The baby would have fallen from his father’s arms as they both tried to cross the river. His lifeless body was found by rescuers after an hour of searching.
Thousands of migrants traveling along the Balkan route are trying to cross the border with Croatia in the extreme northwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina and continue towards Western Europe.
