Bosnia, Afghan child drowns while trying to reach Croatia

BELGRADE – A 5-year-old child drowned after slipping from his father’s arms while attempting to cross the Uni River to reach Croatia. The Croatian media reports.

The family, originally from Afghanistan, consisted of a father, mother and five children, all minors. The incident was reported to the police by a local resident who overheard his parents complaining. On the spot, officers from the Novi Grad police station, firefighters and ambulances intervened.

The child’s body was found after 40 minutes of searching, which was also joined by local people with their boats. After a failed resuscitation attempt, the little boy was transported to the morgue of the Novi Grad Health Center.

According to local police data, the influx of illegal migrants into the country this year is significantly lower than in previous years, but several thousand people are still waiting for the opportunity to continue their journey. Most of the migrants are still concentrated in Una-Sana County. Along the Balkan route, in the extreme north-west of Bosnia-Herzegovina, they try to cross the border with Croatia and continue towards Western Europe.
