MANAUS – The clash between illegal gold miners and indigenous communities is getting worse Yanomami in the protected areas of the Amazon. Second Junior Hekurari Yanomami, from the Yanomami-Ye’kuanna group, the shooting lasted half an hour, in the community of Palimiú in the state of Roraima, near the border with Venezuela. Just under a thousand people live in the area. A video taken from a boat on the Uraricera river records shots, a dozen women and children can be seen running for cover amidst desperate cries.

The river is used by illegal miners, known locally as prospectors, to transport gasoline and other goods to their fields. According to Hekurari Yanomami, the community had erected barricades to try to prevent miners from entering their territory.

The Yanomami area is the largest protected reserve in Brazil: according to unofficial estimates, there are at least twenty thousand unauthorized gold miners. During the government of Jair Bolsonaro clashes in the Amazon have increased significantly. The far-right president disputes the size of indigenous reserves and wants to open some of them to agriculture and mining. His government has weakened environmental safeguards, plus, according to critics, his rhetoric has encouraged illegal activity in the region.
