The UN has called for an “independent, effective and transparent investigation” into the discovery of mass graves at two Gaza hospital complexes after they were besieged and attacked by Israeli troops earlier this year.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed horror at the reported scenes at the Nasser and Al-Shifa compounds. Turk emphasized the need for international investigators to look into the situation, citing the importance of holding those responsible accountable for their actions.

Hospitals are granted special protection under international humanitarian law, and intentional killing of civilians, detainees, and others protected by the law is considered a war crime, added Turk.

A mass grave containing 324 bodies was found this week at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, by Gaza Civil Defense workers after Israeli forces withdrew from the area. Earlier in April, health workers uncovered bodies from mass graves in Al-Shifa after Israeli forces allegedly killed hundreds of Palestinians and left their bodies to decompose during the siege of the compound in northern Gaza.

According to the Gaza Civil Defense, at least 381 bodies were recovered from Al-Shifa after Israeli forces withdrew on April 1.

The US State Department also expressed concern over the “disturbing” discovery of mass graves in the Gaza hospitals. State Department spokesman Vedant Patel stated, “The reports are incredibly concerning, and we are investigating this with the Government of Israel.”

The call for an investigation into these mass graves highlights the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability for those involved in the attacks on the hospitals in Gaza.
