The Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza has been left in ruins following the withdrawal of Israeli forces after a series of deadly military operations. Geolocated videos have shown extensive destruction in the area, with numerous apartment blocks either destroyed or severely damaged. The Civil Defense Directorate in Gaza has reported that their teams have been able to recover several bodies from beneath the rubble, but that heavy excavation equipment will be needed to rescue others.

Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal described the situation as “tragic,” noting that there has been massive destruction of residential buildings and infrastructure in the camp. The Directorate estimated that around 500 people have either been killed, injured, detained or have gone missing during the military operation. CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for more information regarding the scope and purpose of their operations in Nuseirat.

Nuseirat Mayor Iyad Maghari expressed concerns about the lack of basic human services in the area due to the Israeli attacks. He mentioned that residents have been deprived of necessities such as water, sanitation and waste collection. Maghari stated that a significant amount of infrastructure, including roads, water wells and generators, had been destroyed, leading to a buildup of waste and vermin in the streets and around shelters.

The sewage system in Nuseirat has also been severely damaged, with over 3 kilometers of pipes destroyed. Maghari highlighted the shortage of diesel needed to operate water wells and wastewater treatment plants, further exacerbating the dire situation in the camp. The aftermath of the military operations has left Nuseirat in a state of devastation, with residents struggling to cope with the destruction and lack of essential services.
