EU chief and Italian foreign minister call for restraint after Iran attack

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, have called for restraint following the attack on Iran.

Israel carried out Friday’s attack, a US official told CNN. The Israeli military has not commented, and Iran has not identified the origin of the attack.

A “diplomatic effort” by EU and G7 members is already underway to calm tensions in the region following the attack, Tajani told reporters on the sidelines of a summit of G7 foreign ministers in Italy.

“We ask everyone for caution to avoid an escalation in the area,” he said, reiterating Italy’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

EU chief von der Leyen also called for de-escalation, stating that it is “absolutely necessary” for the Middle East to remain “stable”, and urging all parties to “refrain from further actions”.

“We have to do everything possible to ensure that all parties refrain from escalation in that region,” von der Leyen stressed during a trip to Finland on Friday.
