British dance star Liam Scarlett dies at 35: ‘tragic and premature end’ after allegations of sexual abuse

by admin

Liam Scarlett, an internationally renowned former dancer and choreographer, has died at the age of 35. He had left the Royal Ballet last year following allegations of sexual abuse of young students. His family spoke of “tragic and premature death” without revealing the cause. The BBC reports.

Just a day earlier the Royal Danish Theater had canceled his show accusing him of inappropriate behavior. The Royal Ballet had instead detained him after an internal investigation, but it was Scarlett himself, shortly after, to leave the company.

Scarlett joined the Royal Ballet in 2006 as a dancer and retired six years later to pursue choreography, signing some of the most successful shows, including a new production of Swan Lake in 2018.
In 2019 he was suspended from his post after allegations of harassment of some of the students emerged, as a result of which the Australian Queensland Ballet had also canceled a collaboration with the choreographer.

On Friday, the Royal Danish Theater announced the abandonment of a Frankenstein ballet project, which Scarlett would choreograph.
