Can play a tournament on home ground: – Couldn’t say no

On Friday, the tennis tournament Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) kicks off in Telenor Arena in Fornebu. It’s as close to home turf as it gets for Norwegian Casper Ruud.

– It will be fun to play here. There isn’t a tennis club here at Telenor Arena, so it’s the first time we’ve ever played tennis in here, ever since it was set up. It’s fun to be able to be a part of it, says Ruud to Discovery.

Several tennis players would rather play on the ATP tour this week, including “The Golden Swing” in South America, which Ruud has played several times in the past, but for the Norwegian there was no doubt this time:

– When you get the opportunity to play at home, you can’t say no. It was an easy choice.

Ellevill jubel: – One of the roughest points in the whole tournament

Other rules

The UTS tennis tournament operates with completely different rules than a normal ATP tournament. Instead of playing for numbers, one rather plays for time. In addition, you are only allowed to serve once, even if you do not get to the first serve, and there are also bonus cards involved.

– There is a slightly different structure to the campaigns, and a kind of idea of trying to make it more appealing to a younger generation, explains Ruud.

Ruud will in any case play three games during the tournament in Oslo. One game on Friday and two games on Sunday.

– Should I go on to the semi-finals, it will be on Sunday. It will hopefully be an exciting weekend with lots of tennis.

Awake a lot

Last weekend, the Norwegian tennis star played the Davis Cup in Gjøvik. He does not hide that it has been good to have a short period at home in Norway.

– I like to travel, but sometimes it becomes a bit much when it’s week after week after week. The tennis season is very long, I’ve come to understand that now, says Ruud and laughs.

After the UTS tournament, the Norwegian will be traveling for several months.

– There will first be a trip to Mexico, then a couple of weeks to the USA, before I go back to Europe and play on clay. It will be an exciting and handsome spring and summer to come, and hopefully a good season.

Months away from his home country make Ruud appreciate his time at home even more.

– You should enjoy the periods you have at home. It has been lovely to be here for a few weeks now.

The audience gapes for a “free opportunity”: – There were open goals and penalty kicks
