Canary Islands, the Cumbre Vieja volcano subsides after 8 days

by admin

The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma suddenly stopped after eight days. In the last hours from the crater of the volcano there are no more noises of explosions or of leaking materials. A blanket of ash and smoke still hovers over the summit, although it is smaller than in recent days.

It’s too early to say it’s over, but since the eruption started more than a week ago, it wasn’t clear how long it could last. A volcanologist, interviewed by state television RTVE, said such disruptions are not unusual and that it is too early to say that it is over. The lava flow, before the interruption, was approaching the sea and was only 800 meters from the west coast of the island.

Some effects of this volcanic explosiveness have led to a greater intensity of ash emission. The airlines Binter and Canaryfly had therefore canceled flights departing from or arriving in La Palma. About 6,000 people remain evacuated on the island.
