Cardinal Marx: Accepting the Pope’s decision is a major challenge-Vatican News

Pope Francis rejected the request of Cardinal Marx to resign from Munich and Archbishop Freising, and encouraged him to continue his service. The cardinal expressed obedience to the pope’s decision, and now is the time to change. Just return to the usual business, “not a feasible way for me and the archdiocese”.

(Vatican News Network) “In the spirit of obedience, I accept the pope’s decision”. After receiving a reply from Pope Francis, the Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Archbishop of Munich and Freising, expressed his acceptance of the will of the Pope. The cardinal submitted a written resignation to the Pope on May 21, and the Pope replied on June 10, inviting him to remain in office. The Pope’s decision was completely unexpected by the cardinal, and he was deeply moved.

On the day of receiving the Pope’s reply, Cardinal Marx wrote in a letter published by the Archdiocese: “I did not expect such a quick response, nor did I expect my decision to continue my service”. The cardinal said that the “brother tone” in the pope’s words and his understanding of the reasons for his resignation moved him. Cardinal Marx’s resignation was related to the tragedy of sexual assault in the German church. When he accepted the Pope’s decision, he emphasized the need to “find a viable new path and also take into account the history of various failures in order to preach and witness the gospel.”

Card Marx believes that now is the time to reflect on how to “make greater contributions to the renewal of the church”, and we must start with the “important” reminder given by Pope Francis in his reply. The cardinal also emphasized that his statement in the letter of resignation is still “applicable”, that is, “I myself must bear personal and organizational responsibilities, especially to the victims.” The cardinal acknowledged that the Pope’s decision “was a major challenge for me” and therefore “just returning to the agenda of’yesterday’ is not a viable path for me or for the archdiocese”.
