Five Killed, Bridge Split in Half After Cargo Ship Crashes in Southern China

(CNN) – At least five people were killed and one crew member was injured Thursday when a cargo ship crashed into a bridge in southern China, splitting the structure in half, Chinese state media reported.

The Guangzhou Maritime Search and Rescue Center said two vehicles fell into the water and three others landed on the vessel after it crashed into the Lixinsha Bridge in the south of the city in the Pearl River Delta, according to the official account. Weibo in Guangzhou’s Nansha district.

Dramatic photographs of the aftermath showed the bridge split in two with the large ship wrecked beneath the structure. Police vessels were also seen at the scene.

Two people were taken to safety after the collision, state media People’s Daily reported. A rescue operation is underway, he said.

Lixinsha Bridge is located in Guangzhou’s Nansha district, a major international shipping hub in the megacity.

Bridge reinforcement work has been repeatedly postponed in recent years due to structural problems, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
