FLY – When the Covid-19 pandemic exploded, Ramzan Kadyrov, the strong man of Chechnya since 2007, had denied the existence of the coronavirus for weeks and suggested to his fellow citizens to ward off the disease with “lemon, honey and garlic”. In the face of the first infections, however, he had changed his mind and imposed one of the toughest lockdowns in the entire Russian Federation in the Caucasian Republic, sealing the internal borders, ordering a curfew and providing heavy penalties for the “smearers” who violated the quarantine.
