Chile, there are eleven arrests in yesterday’s clashes for the anniversary of Pinochet’s coup

The toll of the people who were arrested yesterday in Chile during the demonstrations organized for the anniversary of the coup led by Augusto Pinochet on 11 September 1973 rose to 11, overthrowing President Salvador Allende. Interior Minister Juan Francisco Galli confirmed this to the Chilean press. “The Carabineros have learned their lesson. The containment has made it possible not to prolong that violence,” said the minister. Galli assured that Saturday passed “for the most part without inconvenience”, even if the presence of elements of a “small group that tried to damage and plunder” was found.

The demonstrations in the capital Santiago were concentrated in Piazza Italia and its surroundings. The area was made safe by the police, also in view of the commemoration ceremony and the procession called by the communist youth that started from Plaza Los Heroes to arrive at the Memorial of the desasparecidos detainees in the Recoleta neighborhood.

Clashes were also recorded in front of La Moneda, the seat of the Chilean presidency, with firecrackers fired at the agents, who in turn responded with tear gas and water gun jets at the crowd.
