The 8th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation will be held in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, from 29th to 30th. This is a grand gathering held as scheduled after the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, the friendly big family of China and Africa overcame difficulties, reflecting the deep trust and firm support between China and Africa, as well as the courage and responsibility of jointly responding to the changes in the world. China and Africa have always been a community with a shared future. After decades of hard work, China-Africa cooperation has grown into a lush, towering tree, with results spreading across the land of Africa, improving the conditions for economic and social development in Africa, and bringing tangible benefits to the people of both sides.

China-Africa cooperation has significantly improved the outlook of infrastructure in Africa. Since the China-Africa Cooperation Forum was established in 2000, Chinese companies have used various funds to help African countries build and upgrade more than 10,000 kilometers of railways, nearly 100,000 kilometers of highways, nearly 1,000 bridges, nearly 100 ports, and power transmission and transformation. There are 66,000 kilometers of lines, 120 million kilowatts of installed power capacity, 150,000 kilometers of communications backbone, and network services covering nearly 700 million user terminals. Charles Onunayiju, director of the Nigeria China Studies Center, said that China has promoted the remarkable development of infrastructure construction and industrialization in African countries, injecting unprecedented vitality and energy into Africa.

China-Africa cooperation has brought many new opportunities for the development of Africa. As of the end of 2020, China has established more than 3,500 companies of various types in Africa, employing more than 80% of local African employees, directly and indirectly creating millions of jobs. Since 2017, China’s service imports from Africa have increased by an average of 20% annually, creating nearly 400,000 jobs in Africa each year. In recent years, new trade formats such as China-Africa e-commerce have developed vigorously, and the cooperation of “Silk Road E-commerce” has been continuously advancing. Donald Rushabwa, a researcher at the Zimbabwe China-Africa Economic and Cultural Exchange Research Center, believes that the strengthening of cooperation between Africa and China in the field of digital economy will bring new investment and development concepts and opportunities to African countries.

China-Africa cooperation helps Africa increase its endogenous driving force for development. China vigorously supports the development of education in Africa and helps Africa cultivate urgently needed talents. China has set up a trust fund project in UNESCO and has trained more than 10,000 teachers in African countries. Since 2018, China has jointly established “Luban Workshops” with local colleges and universities in African countries such as Egypt, South Africa, Djibouti, and Kenya to share China’s high-quality vocational education with Africa. China has also established a number of high-level joint laboratories with African countries, and established the China-Africa Joint Research Center and the China-Africa Innovation Cooperation Center. Many African students report that China’s training “teach people how to fish” has made them “more capable and more confident”.

Since 2009, China has been Africa’s largest trading partner country for 12 consecutive years. The proportion of China-Africa trade in Africa’s total foreign trade has increased year after year, and in 2020 it will exceed 21%. The structure of China-Africa trade continued to be optimized, and China’s exports to Africa had significantly increased its technological content. Mechanical and electrical products and high-tech products accounted for more than 50% of its exports to Africa. As of the end of 2020, Chinese companies have accumulatively invested more than 43 billion U.S. dollars in direct investment in Africa.

China-Africa cooperation has been fruitful, and China-Africa friendship has lasted longer. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, no matter how the international situation changes, China and African countries have always been good friends, good partners sharing weal and woe, and good brothers. China-Africa friendly relations have undergone more than half a century of trials and hardships. The two sides have always stood firmly together on critical moments and major issues concerning each other’s future and destiny.

The Chinese people will never forget that after the Wenchuan and Yushu earthquakes, the African people generously donated their money to support the Chinese people’s earthquake relief and post-disaster reconstruction. This friendship has made the Chinese people feel even more warm. Give it a peach, and repay it with a plum. China has successively implemented food, water supply, women and children, education and other livelihood projects in more than 40 disaster-affected African countries, benefiting more than 10 million people, which has greatly promoted the economic recovery and social development of the disaster-affected countries. After the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, facing the severe test of the epidemic, China and Africa joined hands to deal with it, and China-Africa friendship has been upgraded.

There are reasons to expect that China-Africa cooperation will produce more tangible results, and benefit the vast number of Chinese and African people more and better. Facing the new era, the unity and cooperation of the Chinese and African peoples will set an example for promoting the building of a new type of international relations and building a community with a shared future for mankind.Return to Sohu to see more
