BEIJING – Over 120,000 people have been temporarily evacuated after violent rains caused floods in Shanxi province. The floods affected the lives of 1.76 million residents of 76 counties, cities and districts. About 190,000 hectares of crops were damaged and over 17,000 houses collapsed.
The emergency administrative departments of the various levels have assigned 4,000 tents, 3,200 rollaway beds as well as cotton clothes and blankets to help those affected by the disaster.
Authorities in the northern province of Shanxi have allocated 50 million yuan (about $ 7.8 million) to support flood control and relief efforts. The fund will be used for evacuations and subsequent resettlement of the disaster-affected population, for the renovation and reconstruction of damaged homes, as well as for the repair of damaged water systems and for the restoration of agricultural production in the most affected areas.
Chinese coal futures are at an all-time high in the aftermath of the disaster that forced dozens of mines to close. Those traded on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange rose 11.6% to RMB 408.20 ($ 218.74) per ton. The Csi Coal index of large Shanghai and Shenzhen-listed mining companies rose 2.1%, partly making up for losses last week, when the regime ordered production tightening and prices plummeted.
