China: Fukushima water discharges, the Japanese ambassador summoned

by admin

BEIJING. China has summoned the Japanese ambassador to Beijing, Hideo Tarumi, to protest the decision to dump contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in the Pacific Ocean starting in 2023. As the Chinese foreign ministry said, the deputy Chinese Foreign Minister Wu Jianghao summoned Tarumi last night to file a formal complaint about the decision and demand that Japan stop the announced project. “Japan must withdraw this wrong decision and establish a joint working group, within the framework of international institutions, which includes Chinese experts,” Wu said. The plant’s wastewater treatment, according to Beijing, must be supervised internationally, and not be decided unilaterally. By doing this, Tokyo “violates international norms” with a decision “not suited to a civilized country”.
