China launches its third aircraft carrier: the “Type 003” warship with catapult system

China has launched its third aircraft carrier, state media reported. Launched in a Shanghai shipyard with great fanfare, the People’s Liberation Army warship “Type 003” is the “first catapult aircraft carrier entirely designed and built by China,” state broadcaster CCTV reported. The announcement comes as tensions between China and the US have increased significantly in recent weeks over the Taiwan issue. China has repeatedly sailed its warships across the strait separating the island from the mainland and used fighter jets to repel patrols from the United States and its allies.

Called Fujian, the latest carrier is technically more advanced than the others in the fleet and is only the second carrier completely built in China. However, it will take years for it to reach operational capacity, as the Ministry of Defense has not announced a date for entry into service. “The navigation and mooring tests will be carried out as planned after the launch of the ship,” CCTV reported. China has two other aircraft carriers in service.

The Liaoning was commissioned in 2012 and the Shandong entered service in 2019. Unlike the Fujian, these warships use a ski jump-style platform for jet takeoffs and do not have a catapult system.
