China: the population is aging, Beijing authorizes families to have up to 3 children

In response to the data on the decline in the birth rate that emerged from the last ten-year census, China has decided to abolish the limit of having a maximum of two children and will allow families to have up to three. “In response to the aging of the population, couples are allowed to have three children,” the Xinhua news agency said, referring to what was decided during a meeting of the political bureau led by President Xi Jinping.

In 2020, a year marked by the pandemic, the number of births fell to 12 million, compared to 14.65 million in 2019, when the birth rate (10.48 per 1,000) was already at its lowest since 1949. After more than three decades of “one-child policy”, China loosened the rules in 2016, allowing all Chinese to have a second child, but that wasn’t enough to push the birth rate back up.
