China and Cuba would have reached an agreement in principle which will have to be perfected in the future. At the moment, writes the Wall Street Journalthe agreement provides that China will provide “several billion dollars” to Cuba for the construction of a military base that will allow “interception of electronic communications in the southern states of the United States, where there are many military bases, and to observe naval traffic American”.

It is unclear exactly when this base will be built. Neither the US, Chinese or Cuban governments have officially confirmed the news.

At the moment the only military base of a foreign country in Cuba is that of Guantanamo, managed by the United States on the basis of a contract stipulated with the Cuban government in 1903, with no expiry date. The only Chinese base outside China is located in Djibouti, Africa. For years now Cuba has been looking for new international allies among the adversaries of the United States, which for decades has maintained an embargo on the island in opposition to the communist regime that has ruled since 1959.
