Hard line against covid in Australia. Adelaide will be the third major Australian city subject to containment obligations from Tuesday evening, at a time when all of Australia is struggling to stop the progression of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus. Five cases of Covid-19 have been detected in the state of Southern Australia (south), of which Adelaide is the capital, which will therefore suffer the same fate as a large area around Sydney and the state of Victoria, of which Melbourne is the capital. The move means that 14 of 25 million Australians will be confined. “Since 6pm this evening, South Australia is going into containment,” said Prime Minister Steven Marshall, adding that this measure would be in effect for an initial one-week period. “We don’t do it with the heart, but we think we only have one chance to solve it.” Australia has long been praised for its first good results in tackling the pandemic, mainly due to the very tight border closures of the huge island continent. But it is currently registering around 100 new cases per day, which complicates the contamination tracking operations. The figure may seem insignificant compared to the number of coronavirus cases in other major countries. But it is a challenge for Australia which has opted for a “zero cases” strategy from the start. The vaccination campaign, however, is slow. The Sydney outbreak allegedly started with an unvaccinated driver who accompanied crews of some foreign airlines and tested positive in mid-June. The virus has since crossed borders between states, and now around 100 new cases are being registered every day. The state of Queensland (north-east) is also on guard after discovering that a woman who had visited several tourist sites was positive for the coronavirus.
Brazil: infections and deaths are slowing down, vaccinations increase
Brazil, one of the countries most affected by the pandemic in the world, has recorded 542 new deaths for covid in the past 24 hours, the lowest in five months. According to the bulletin released by the Ministry of Health, the Latin American giant also registered 15,271 new infections from covid, the lowest number of cases in one day in more than eight months.
There have been 542,756 deaths since the start of the pandemic, but the average death toll in the past week has dropped to 1,218 per day, the lowest average in over four months. Brazil reached a record average of 77,328 daily infections on June 23, while the current average is now close to half. The decline in both the number of deaths and infections is attributed to the progress of the vaccination campaign in Brazil, which has accelerated in recent weeks after a slow and late start.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, Brazil has so far administered 124.1 million vaccinations against covid. Of those immunized, 90.1 million Brazilians have already received at least the first dose of the vaccine and another 34 million have received the planned two doses or single-dose vaccine. This means that at least 42.5% of the 212 million Brazilians have already received the first dose and 16% have received the full course of immunization.
