ROME (ITALPRESS) – Coup d’état in Myanmar. Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the ruling party, the National League for Democracy, and others were arrested by the army. After a few hours, the military announced the imposition of a state of emergency for a period of one year, justifying the arrests with “enormous irregularities” in the November elections. Former General Myint Swe will be interim president for the duration of the state of emergency. Suu Kyi’s party made it known that the leader had appealed to the people, urging “not to accept the coup and to respond and protest wholeheartedly”. Aung San Suu Kyi has been committed to human rights in her country for decades, and in 1991 she won the Nobel Peace Prize precisely for her opposition to the military regime.
