Covid in Spain, maxi-outbreak in Mallorca: 600 infected children. “It all started with a concert and parties”

by admin

More than 600 children from seven Spanish autonomous communities have so far tested positive for the coronavirus after being in Mallorca between 12 and 20 June, but the data is still evolving. The news was reported by the daily El Pais stressing that another 2,000 young people are in quarantine in Madrid after returning from trips to the island.

The Balearic authorities have identified several sources of contagion: parties organized on boats and in nine hotels in the Llucmajor beach area, while a file has been opened for non-compliance with anti-Covid measures against the organizers of a Reggaeton music concert held in the bullfighting arena of Palma de Mallorca. Every year, around 12,000 students from different regions choose Mallorca as a destination to celebrate the end of their studies. The trips are organized by various specialized agencies, such as ‘Tu Fin de Curso’ or ‘Xcape’, well known among students, who annually sell all-inclusive packages – pool and boat parties included – for less than 400 euros.

Meanwhile, the average cumulative incidence of Covid infections recorded in Spain in the last 14 days has risen slightly for the third consecutive day: it is now 95.03 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the latest update by the Ministry of Health. Many of the cases relating to the Majorca outbreak have not yet been accounted for.
