The hospitalizations of under 50s for Covid-19 in the United States, and in particular of the age group 30-39 and 0-18, have reached record levels according to data from the CDC, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This was announced by CNN online, specifying that each sub-group under the age of 50 has exceeded the previous peak, recorded in the first half of last January.
Hospitalizations in the 30-39 range and under 18s, in particular, are 30% more than the previous record. The incidence of all-age hospitalizations still remains below January levels, but at the current rate – more than 11,000 hospital admissions last week, the CDC note, the United States could hit another record within a month. The most at risk of severe illness and hospitalization, according to experts, are the unvaccinated.
In the US, according to CDC data, only 51% of the population is fully vaccinated against the virus. A vaccine has not yet been approved for those under 12, but clinical trials are underway. “The revision of vaccines against Covid-19 – said surgeon general Vivek Murthy to CNN – are the priority for the US”. Murthy hoped that vaccines for under 12s could be available by the end of the year. The alarming growth in cases due to the more transmissible Delta variant, CNN notes, has multiplied the appeals of experts for vaccination.
