Covid, record of infections in Asia for the fourth wave. Russia reaches 150,000 deaths

ROME. Variants push Covid. And in Asia, the pandemic is spreading with unprecedented speed. In South Korea, 1,784 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last 24 hours, the highest number since the beginning of the pandemic and which exceeds the record reached last week. The data, released by the South Korean Agency for Disease Prevention and Control, is due to the spread of the delta variant in the country, which has so far managed to contain the infections relatively well. In recent days, the Seoul Ministry of Health spoke of a “fourth wave”.

In Russia, according to data from the operations center for the fight against coronavirus, there are more than six million cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the health emergency and almost 150,000 deaths. The authorities confirmed 23,770 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in the last 24 hours and 784 deaths this morning. The official bulletin thus rises to 6,006,536 with 149,922 victims. Moscow is once again recording the largest number of new cases (3,188) and deaths (101). In Russia there are 5,382,213 people declared recovered after contracting Covid-19, while there are 474,401 active cases.

Lockdown

While the lockdowns have certainly had health effects, it is “fake news” that their impact has been worse than that of the pandemic. This is demonstrated by an international scientific study coordinated by Duke university published by BMJ Global Health. That the “cure” was worse than the “evil” is a false myth, the researchers attest. Looking at excess mortality, for example, statistics suggest that lockdowns have not been associated with large numbers of deaths in countries such as Australia and New Zealand, which have had few cases, while countries with very large and few epidemics measures, such as Brazil, Sweden or Russia, have had a large excess of mortality. As for another important negative aspect of closures, the one that concerns the school, the reasoning is complex, the authors write. “Not going to school clearly affects children’s mental health – underline the authors of the study -, but it also causes the loss of a relative; in the US alone it is estimated that 43 thousand children have lost a parent and at least 2 million have lost a grandfather ». It is therefore not true that “government intervention was worse than the pandemic itself in most situations.”
