Denmark helped the United States spy on Angela Merkel

by admin

PARIS – Denmark allowed US intelligence to spy Angela Merkel and some other European politicians. This is what emerges from an investigation conducted by the Danish public television, which was reported by the newspapers The world e Southgerman newspaper, according to which several German, French, Norwegian and Swedish parliamentarians and senior officials were also spied on by the National Security Agency (NSA). The American intelligence agency responsible for electronic interception allegedly used interception systems on submarine telecommunication cables which are owned by the Copenhagen government but whose access to the US agency was provided for by agreements with the United States.

The surveillance of the NSA, as reported by the journalistic investigation which is also based on confidential notes of the secret services, took place in a period between 2012 and 2014, and focused in particular as regards Germany on the Chancellor but also on Frank-Walter Steinmeier, former Foreign Minister and current President of the Federal Republic, e Peer Steinbruck, a leading figure of the SPD, the social democratic party.

The surveillance of the NSA on allied countries is not an absolute novelty and had been unveiled since Edward snowden in 2013. Even then, Merkel’s name appeared, with wiretapping through the US embassy in Berlin. Just around that time, Danish intelligence had done investigations to identify keywords and communications that the US agency was looking for in the data stream it had access to. In 2015 came the conclusion of the secret services, enclosed in a report of about fifteen pages, the content of which has only now been disclosed by the journalistic investigation. The fact that the NSA used its agreements with Denmark to spy on EU-allied governments is documented in the report. However, it is not clear whether the Danish authorities were actively complicit or whether they were somehow deceived by Washington.

The collaboration between the NSA and Denmark was realized around 2012 with the construction on the Danish territory of a massive data interception system on submarine cables. A sensitive data storage center was built with the help of the NSA inside a Danish intelligence facility on the southern tip of Amager Island, south of Copenhagen. Among the names under surveillance by the American agency there are also French, Swedish and Norwegian politicians whose names are not known for now. The Danish Defense Minister, Trine Bramsen, did not want to comment on the revelations but reiterated that “the systematic interception of close allies is unacceptable”. The scandal had been in the air for months. By August, the entire secret service staff was suspended and his former boss, who was about to become ambassador to Berlin, was recalled.
