Basketball world champion Dennis Schröder is moving from the Toronto Raptors to the Brooklyn Nets within the North American professional league NBA.

The Braunschweig native confirmed corresponding reports from US media on Thursday: “Yes, that’s right,” said Schröder.

The Nets have “good players to play with.” He hopes “that Mikal Bridges and Cam Thomas aren’t too mad at me about the World Cup.” The two US national players had lost to Germany in the semifinals with the USA at the World Cup.

Surprised in his sleep

Schröder was surprised in his sleep by his move to the Brooklyn Nets. “My agent called me a few times. I woke up and he told me I was going to Brooklyn,” said the 30-year-old during his introduction to his new franchise.

After a good six months with the Toronto Raptors, the team from New York is now Schröder’s seventh stop in North America. “It’s a big city. I come from Braunschweig in Germany with only 250,000 inhabitants, a small town,” said Schröder with a smile: “I’m a family man and I’m always with my children, my wife and my loved ones. Of course there will be traffic hurt a little.”

“A lot of talent”

But he can’t wait to “get to know everyone in the locker room and in this organization and start working,” added Schröder: “I think we have a lot of talent in the team. I want to give it my all every single day win the games.”

Schröder followed his new team’s 95:118 defeat against the Cleveland Cavaliers on site. The change period in the NBA ended on Thursday.

He then played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics, the Houston Rockets, again for the Lakers and, since the beginning of the season, for the Toronto Raptors in Canada.

In the Eastern Conference table, the Nets are just ahead of the Raptors and are fighting for participation in the playoffs.
