The word appeared on one of the Cape Town murals. There is the face of Desmond Tutu, the clear glasses, the smiling face as only his can be. And then that word, dear to racists: kaffir, an epithet used towards blacks as a derogatory word, a word now outlawed in South Africa. Tutu probably didn’t even notice. Arch, as someone affectionately calls him, turns 90 and knows what he has done for his country.
