Every day I receive news of Afghan acquaintances who have managed to reach the airport, alone or with family. Seeing the wall of crowds around me I wonder how they did it. Once inside, they send messages and photos, their faces tense and tired. They smile for success and to reassure remaining relatives by asking children to wave goodbye.
