At least 18 dead and 24 injured are the toll from the collapse of a ten-storey building in the el-Salam district of Cairo. Rescuers are clearing the rubble in search of survivors.
The reasons for the collapse are not yet known and a team of engineers has been sent to the site to verify the stability of the surrounding buildings. Building collapses are not uncommon episodes in Egypt, where builders often violate regulations to make more profits and new floors are often added to existing buildings without any licenses.
The Egyptian government recently implemented a crackdown on illegal construction, arresting several builders and destroying numerous non-compliant buildings.
