CAIRO – The Egyptian activist Sanaa Seif, 28, was released from prison after the end of her one and a half year prison sentence on charges of “spreading false news and abusing social media”. Sanaa Seif is the activist’s sister Alaa Abdel Fattah, central figure of the 2011 uprising, which on Monday 20 December was sentenced to five years in prison by an exceptional court in Cairo for “disseminating false information”. The young woman, who turned 29 three days ago, served her sentence of 18 months in prison for spreading false news through social media and offending a public official. Member of one of the most prominent families in Egypt for the defense of rights and for the democratization of the country, Sanaa Seif was arrested in 2020 in front of the headquarters of the general police prosecutor, in cairo, where she had gone to report a ‘ assault suffered together with his mother and sister. For some days the three women had decided to camp at the entrance to the Tora prison, where his brother Alaa was held, to protest against the fact that for some time they had not received any news on his condition from the prison authorities.
