Epidemic in Liberia spreads, Pope’s donation arrives at Mission Hospital-Vatican News

by admin

Liberia’s vaccination program is progressing very slowly, and Pope Francis has donated a variety of medical and health supplies to this African country. Father Nimene, Secretary-General of the Bishops’ Conference of the country: We thank the Holy Father Pope for these donations. The Pope’s care for the country has not been interrupted since 2020.

(Vatican News Network)Pope Francis has always been concerned about Africa and the people who do not have the appropriate and sufficient resources and facilities to deal with the consequences of the new crown epidemic and suffer for this. On the African continent alone, more than 5 million people have been hit by the epidemic; more than 4 million people have died of the epidemic worldwide. On August 11 this year, two portable lung ventilators, ten boxes of surgical masks and other medical and health supplies were delivered to the Catholic Good Shepherd Hospital in Sitaiki, Swaziland. This African country has notified more than 30,000 new crown cases, of which more than 900 people have died. On that occasion, José Luis Ponce de León, Bishop of Manzini, expressed his gratitude to the Pope and emphasized the active and leading role of the Pope in this difficult stage of human life.

The Pope’s actions never stopped. Just a few days ago, in the face of Liberia with more than 5,000 infections and 245 deaths, Pope Francis sent a large amount of medical supplies to the Catholic Saint Joseph’s Hospital in the Diocese of Monrovia. The materials donated by the Pope were delivered to the hospital by the ambassador of the Holy See to the local bishop Dagoberto Campos Salas (Dagoberto Campos Salas) on August 25. The Secretary-General of the Bishops of Liberia, Father Dennis Cephas Nimene, was present. These materials include disinfectants, ventilators, masks, oxygen and protective masks, etc.

Father Nimene expressed his gratitude at this opportunity. The priest mentioned that the pope has paid attention to them since the outbreak of the epidemic in 2020 and supported the work of the Liberian church by donating a donation equivalent to 40,000 euros. The secretary-general of the Bishops’ Conference emphasized that “the latest donation shows that the long-term solidarity and care have been continued.” In addition, the vaccination program in this country in Africa is progressing very slowly, so far only 0.6% of the population has been vaccinated with two doses.

In Liberia, the 22 medical institutions operated by the Catholic Church are based on St. Joseph’s Hospital managed by the Brotherhood. In 2014, all staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital, including fellows and lay believers, worked hand in hand to respond to the Ebola pandemic. Since then, the hospital has actively worked to train personnel and prepare corresponding equipment in order to respond to similar emergencies. At the same time, the Secretary-General of the Bishops Conference of the country also pointed out that “The Catholic Church supports the new crown vaccination plan and strives to encourage believers to get vaccinated.”
