Ethiopia has announced an immediate ceasefire with the Tigray rebels. This was announced in a statement from the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in which it is explained that it has accepted the offer of a ceasefire for the duration of the agricultural season, which lasts until September. “The ceasefire will allow peasants to cultivate their land, humanitarian groups to operate without military movements and to confront the members of the TPFL who want peace”, reads the government statement.

The announcement of the ceasefire comes after unconfirmed news spread on twitter, according to which the representatives of the Ethiopian government have hurriedly left Makallé, the capital of Tigray, where the rebels of the TPLF have taken a position.

The conflict in Tigray began in early November with the dispatch of federal troops to the region against the rebel administration of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPFL), a former hegemonic force in the Ethiopian government. The armed clashes, in which Eritrean troops also participated alongside Addis Ababa, resulted in millions of refugees and displaced persons as well as thousands of civilian victims. The conflict has caused a serious humanitarian crisis with over five million people, according to UN estimates, in need of food aid and the risk of famine.
