The EPP chose Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen as its top candidate. However, there is great skepticism even within our own ranks.

Bucharest. At the kitchen table in the family apartment in Brussels, her father had laid the foundations of her deep conviction in a united Europe; and he would be proud of her today, many decades later: Ursula von der Leyen used a personal anecdote to campaign for her election as top candidate in front of hundreds of delegates at the European People’s Party congress in Bucharest. With success: a large majority of 400 delegates (89 voted no) elected the German as the front woman of the EPP for the European elections in three months. Since, according to all surveys, the EPP will comfortably defend first place despite the rise of right-wing populist parties, von der Leyen will almost certainly remain Commission head for another five years – even though she is considered extremely controversial even within her own ranks. With their “fist in their pocket,” some delegates would have given her their vote in the secret election, “Die Presse” learned from EPP circles.
