Social networks: Facebook and Instagram affected by global outage

Meta platforms were difficult to access on Tuesday. The giant indicates that everything is back to normal.

Meta suffered an outage on Tuesday March 5, 2024. Facebook, Instagram and Messenger were affected.

Social media giant Meta suffered an unusual outage across several of its platforms on Tuesday, affecting both Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, but it ended shortly after user reports began.

“Earlier today, a technical issue prevented users from accessing some of our services. We resolved this issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was affected, and we apologize for the inconvenience caused,” said a spokesperson for the group, Andy Stone, on X (ex-Twitter), less d ‘an hour after recognizing the fault.

Downdetector, which lists technical problems on digital platforms, recorded up to 580,000 user reports for Facebook worldwide and up to 92,000 for Instagram around 3:30 p.m. GMT.

“We are aware of an issue affecting Facebook login. Our teams of engineers are actively seeking to resolve the problem as quickly as possible,” the Californian group indicated on its site, noting possible operating problems.

Nearly 4 billion people use at least one of the group’s platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp) every month.

On “If you’re reading this message, it’s because our servers are working,” quipped Elon Musk, the owner of .

“Oh my God, Facebook is down, where am I going to get my ration of AI generated images with millions of likes and comments from boomers (over 57 years old, Editor’s note) who thinks these are real photos?”, wrote Noah Giansiracusa, a mathematics professor at Bentley University.

During “Super Tuesday”

The outage occurred during “Super Tuesday”, this crucial date in the American primary calendar, when voters in 15 states and one territory choose their Democratic and Republican candidates for the presidential election. This year it should confirm the inexorability of a Trump-Biden duel in November.

Platforms are regularly affected by momentary outages, but larger ones are a reminder of the importance they have taken on in daily life.

Previous breakdowns

WhatsApp, the very popular messaging service bought by Facebook in 2014 for more than $19 billion, for example suffered a significant interruption in October 2022.

The previous year, also in October, the group’s four services had experienced an unprecedented outage: Downdetector had recorded more than 5.6 million reports from around the world in one hour.

The incident had plunged Mark Zuckerberg’s firm into a double crisis, while it was already facing the revelations of a whistleblower, Frances Haugen, a former engineer who accused the group of putting “profits” before user safety.

This formula, widely used, has since haunted the company renamed Meta.
