Farewell to the British crown: the island of Bardados has proclaimed itself a Republic

by admin

The Caribbean island of Bardados has proclaimed itself a republic, with a president elected as head of state. Governor General Dame Sandra Mason, as local media reported, was sworn in as the Caribbean island’s first president.

Farewell to the British crown

The turning point marks the farewell to the British crown. On Sunday, Prince Charles traveled to Barbados to attend the official ceremony, celebrated a month after the former British colony’s Parliament elected its first Republican president.

The drive to become a republic began more than two decades ago and culminated with the island’s parliament elected its first president last month by a two-thirds majority of votes.

Barbados Governor General Sandra Mason was expected to take the pre-dawn oath on Tuesday, when the island marked its 55th independence from Britain.
