FC St. Pauli is taking big steps towards promotion to the Bundesliga. An art of coach Fabian Hürzeler’s team is dealing with adversity. The brown and white always find the right answer. Also on Saturday in Nuremberg about the lack of personnel on the defensive?

When the second division table appeared on the Millerntorstadion scoreboard a few minutes after the end of the home game against Hertha BSC (2-0), there was another cheer. The top position alone was not the reason for this. This is nothing new for coach Hürzeler’s team. It was the lead of now ten points over third place in the table held by city rivals HSV, the relegation place, and even eleven points over a non-promotion place that brought so much joy.

“It feels good to have such a lead,” said offensive player Marcel Hartel, who is the league’s top scorer with 23 points (13 goals, ten assists).

And indeed: what an outstanding starting position this is! One that practically has to lead to a jump into the Bundesliga – at least that’s what the statistics say. Never in the history of the second division has a team lost such a lead at this point in the season and missed out on promotion.

If there are six wins in the remaining nine games (in Nuremberg, against Paderborn, in Karlsruhe, against Elversberg, in Hanover, against Rostock, at HSV, against Osnabrück and at Wehen Wiesbaden), everything would be mathematically watertight.

St. Pauli succeeds in responding to setbacks

But five or four wins are probably enough. In the latter constellation, FC St. Pauli would then have 63 points. Such a number has been enough for direct promotion six times in the past ten seasons. In any case, there would have to be an epic collapse for the Millerntor team to not go up.

The brown-whites gained their lead by coping with adversity and giving the right answers. When the Hürzeler team weakened before the winter break and it already seemed as if the competition had cracked the code of success, the Hamburg team set three exclamation points every week with three wins in the first three second division games of the new calendar year.

“We have to stay down to earth.”

Marcel Hartel, Top-Scorer des FC St. Pauli

The first defeat in the league, the 0-1 at 1. FC Magdeburg, was answered immediately – with a 1-0 at home against Eintracht Braunschweig – and a 4-3 at second-placed Holstein Kiel. And finally, even after the weakest game of the season, a 1:3 at FC Schalke 04, St. Pauli got right back on track: against Hertha BSC it was a very strong performance and a completely deserved victory. Hartel still warns against premature optimism: “We have to stay down-to-earth, deliver a performance like today week after week, and then maybe it can work in the future,” he told NDR.

St. Pauli with worries on the defensive

Now the question arises once again as to how the North Germans deal with adversity – this time of a personal nature. Before the game at 1. FC Nürnberg next Saturday (1 p.m., in the live center at >), Hürzeler is running out of defensive players. Manolis Saliakas will sit out due to his fifth yellow card.

Defense chief Eric Smith was already missing against Hertha due to a muscle injury in the adductor area that he suffered in the S04 game. At least Karol Mets was given the all-clear on Monday. The Estonian defender was substituted with an injury in the game against Hertha. The ligaments in the knee are intact, it said in a statement. “Now it will be a matter of seeing from day to day how resilient his knee is in order to rule out any risk,” said sports director Andreas Bornemann.

Talent Scheller makes his starting eleven debut

The U23 central defender Tjark Scheller, who made his second division debut against Berlin, could possibly even play from the start in Nuremberg. The previously strong attacker Oladapo Afolayan was also missing against Hertha (ankle ligament injury). So it remains to be seen who Hürzeler can field in the guest appearance at FCN so that the next victory can be achieved there and the upcoming international break is one of pure anticipation – for FC St. Pauli’s sixth Bundesliga promotion, which is already clearly visible.
