LONDON – Fear and tension are growing in Northern Ireland. The news is disturbing: yesterday a bomb was found under the car of a policewoman, in the county of (London) Derry, on the border with Ireland. Fortunately, the bomb did not go off. But it is the tremendous sign of an escalation of violence and threats that have erupted in recent weeks and which have not been seen on the island for years.
“We strongly condemn the terrorists who tried to harm the policewoman”, was the harsh comment of the first local minister, the unionist Arlene Foster, “It is a reckless and futile act”.
