Fifteen people died in an apartment building fire in Nanjing, China

A big one developed on Saturday fire in an apartment building in the city of Nanjing, China: 15 people died, and at least forty were injured. It is not yet clear what caused the fire: local authorities said it may have started from the first floor of the building, where some electric bicycles were parked. The fire was put out at 6am local time, but rescue operations continued for another eight hours. All injured people were taken to hospital.

In China in recent months there have been many fires, often deadly. In November, for example, 39 people died in a fire in the basement of a shop in the city of Xinyu, in the Chinese province of Jiangxi. On that occasion, President Xi Jinping spoke of the need for “deep reflection” on the fires, calling for greater efforts to “curb the frequent occurrence of security-related incidents”.
