LONDON – Finland has announced the official request for NATO membership for next week. Sweden has announced that it will soon do the same. Russia has made it known that there will be retaliation, but not “hostile acts”: in the meantime, it has cut off the gas in Helsinki. This is what the enlargement of the Atlantic Alliance means for the two Scandinavian countries and for the military balance in Europe.
