Further spread of the flames was quickly prevented and the fire was finally completely extinguished. “22 people were evacuated from the fire and the surrounding buildings,” writes the police.

Two people with suspected smoke poisoning had to be cared for by the emergency services and then transferred to the Uri Cantonal Hospital. According to police, the people have now been able to leave the hospital.

However, an 88-year-old man was missing. The police recovered a dead person from the residential building at midday.

The identity of the person found dead and the cause of death have not yet been clarified, the Uri canton police said on Thursday afternoon. However, it is assumed that it is the missing man.

As the Uri cantonal police further stated when asked, the evacuated people were initially accommodated in the retirement and nursing home in the municipality of Andermatt. The evacuees from the surrounding houses will probably be able to return to them during the afternoon. People who lived in the fire property will be temporarily accommodated in other apartments by the municipality of Andermatt.

The village center of Andermatt remains closed until further notice. A traffic diversion is signaled.
