Foreign media: Gaddafi’s death for ten years, Libya is in chaos
Reference News Network reported on October 22. According to AFP’s Tripoli report on October 19, it has been 10 years since Gaddafi’s death. Libya is still in chaos in the ongoing war. Disagreements between various rival camps may ruin the presidential election in December.
According to reports, on October 20, ten years ago, Gaddafi was caught in the north of the country, first tortured, then executed on the same day, and finally the corpse was in a market.
The report pointed out that a controversial international intervention launched in the name of NATO in 2011 led to the fall of Gaddafi. Since then, Libya has fallen into a vicious circle of violence and internal disputes fueled by external interference. After years of conflict between hostile camps, a transitional government finally gained a foothold under the auspices of the United Nations in March this year and will hold a presidential election on December 24.
Libyan scholar Mahmoud Halfala believes that elections alone are “not enough to bring about a final solution”. He believes that “Libya lacks experience and the road to change is quite long.” He cited the conditions for peace and stability in the country: “External interference should cease, voters must stay away from all tribalism and localism, and all parties accept the election results.”
In 2000, Libya’s per capita GDP was the highest in Africa. The war subsequently changed everything, and power cuts, damaged infrastructure, and inflation followed.
Faraj Najib, a Benghazi vendor, still intends to remain optimistic: “For the extremely poor Libyans, the election is still a glimmer of hope.”
