Two earthquakes occurred in succession at 23:34 local time (22:34 Beijing time) and 23:36 (22:36 Beijing time) in the waters near Fukushima County on the 16th, with magnitudes of 6.1 and 7.4 respectively. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said in the Diet on the morning of the 17th that a total of 4 people were killed and 97 were injured.

According to the relevant information updated by the Japan Atomic Energy Regulatory Commission in the early morning of the 17th, the cooling water pumps for the spent fuel pools of some units of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and the Fukushima No. 2 Nuclear Power Station were stopped for a while, but have since been fully restored. There is no impact on the cooling of nuclear fuel. The fire alarm was activated, but no fire was confirmed. In addition, one of the four external power systems at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was unavailable.
